This was no accidental death. All good shepherds would carry these items. Five times in this text Jesus clearly affirmed the sacrificial nature of his death. “The good shepherd, I am,” is how a Jew would have heard him. These two graces follow his sheep everywhere they go. They’re not theirs. One of the chief means of your grace to us is your Word, and how desperately we need to hear it this morning! He provides. In the morning you’d need to separate the sheep.
