As we normally do, I walked out into the hall, shook hands, and had conversations with people. It’s good to remind ourselves of that. He knows it all! Now, here in the west, we tend to think of shepherds as sentimental beings with their arms full of cuddly lambs. Jesus’ bold assertions can’t be missed in these “I am” statements. Why does the hireling flee? In John 10:11, Jesus says, I am the good shepherd. Read again verses 1-5. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. This was no accidental death. All good shepherds would carry these items. Five times in this text Jesus clearly affirmed the sacrificial nature of his death. “The good shepherd, I am,” is how a Jew would have heard him. These two graces follow his sheep everywhere they go. They’re not theirs. One of the chief means of your grace to us is your Word, and how desperately we need to hear it this morning! He provides. In the morning you’d need to separate the sheep. So, what does that mean? As such, let’s have a little quick review today. 9-10; Pasture. Sermon Tone Analysis. It’s based on John 10:1-10 where Jesus says, "I am the Good Shepherd." It was his knowledge of what we needed and his willingness to meet that need that led to his death. The verses 7-9 last week are in a bigger portion that shapes today’s sermon, vv.
